Kenya

Kenya is a land of many contrasts. Kenya straddles the equator on the eastern side of Africa.  The country's name derived from Africa's second highest mountain, Mount Kenya, with it's jagged peaks covered with snow. This is where much of the world's coffee and tea are grown.

The country is bisected from north to south by a dramatic division, The Great Rift Valley, which starts in the Gulf of Aden (Jordan) and passe to the south of Mozambique. There are a plenty of lakes in The Great Rift Valley with spectacular views and it brims with nearly two million flamingos  - a pink wonder itself.

To the far west lies Lake Victoria (Africa's most extensive lake), the fabled source of the Nile. There are lakes like Lake Turkana, - Baringo, - Naivasha, - Nakuru, to name a few. Home to birdlife in abundance!

Kenya's national parks and reserves are amongst the world's most famous and frequent visited places on the earth and include the rolling savannas of Masai Mara, where the world's largest animal migration takes place each year. More than 1.2 million wildebeest follow their traditional circuit, in search of new grass, crossing the Mara River with daring leaps into the river. Needless to say, accompany by plenty of predators like lion, leopard, cheetah and crocodiles alike.

The Amboselli park is renowned for its large herds of elephant and buffalo, against the magnificent back drop of Africa's highest mountain, Kilimanjaro.

The other well known parks are Tsavo East and - West, Aderdare-, Mount Kenya, Meru-, Samburu-/Shaba Reserves with unique species like the Geranuk, Grevvy Zebra and Reticulated Giraffe.

The choice of safari's include the Lodge-, Tented-, Mobile-, Hot Air Balloon- and Camel Safari.

The warm and balmy waters of the Indian Ocean forms Kenya's eastern border. The coast is protected by a fringing coral reef, that provides sheltered lagoons. This provides breath taking under water scenery for the avid divers with an abundance of colourfull fish and corals. Dolphins, Whale Sharks, Turtles and Giant Manta Rays can be explored beyond these reefs.

The Marine Reserve of Wasini Island offer the opportunity to swim with dolphins and turtles.

The south coast hosts two of the most popular beach resorts like Diani- and Tiwi Beach. Diani offers a variety accommodation and activities. The most popular Beach Bar : Ali Baba & The Forty Thieves is a must on an any visit to Diani.

Mombassa is the hub of the Coastal Region and hosts some top notch hotels and restaurants (Tamarind the most famous of the lot) and a very active night life with pubs and bars.

To the north of Mombassa is the picture perfect coastal towns of Malindi, Kalifi, Lamu and Watamu. The world famous beach resort Hemmingways is a leisure- and sport fishing heaven for tourists around the globe. These towns are steeped in history from the spice trading days and visitors from the Arab world, to the discoverer Vasco Da Gama (1498).

Nairobi is the capitol of Kenya and is unique in the sense that it hosts a national park on the fringes of this bustling East African city. Animals are free to migrate and roam in and out of this amazing park.

The people of Kenya are a mix stemming from ancient historical backgrounds. People from Arabia and Asia, as well as from other parts of Africa, have over time settled here, to form new cultures and customs. Todays people live in the era of technological advancement, yet there are still nomadic herders (Masai), pastoralists and agriculturists, who adhere to their age-old traditions within this modern society.
